The problem we are facing at the moment is how to get the Ilyushin aircraft (pictured below) to land on a 3km long x 85m wide strip of sheet ice. The heavy snowfall at Union Glacier requires the strip to be constantly cleared by machines and the wind is currently too strong to allow clear visibility….and there is low cloud.
However, the highly reliable weather man in the ALE office is forecasting a window of low wind, good visibility and higher cloud level for Friday which will hopefully clear the first group of passengers. Then it is our turn – but probably not until at least Saturday.
So, we edge closer to the Antarctic continent, but she will only allow us in when she is ready. Until then…we wait.

hi mark, unfortunately you will not be here to do the Turkeys but hope you will have a great time out there might have Wendi round next Friday to catch up with mum and dad, just hoping Kev has remembered his Weobley flag!! i’m sure he has forgot but Mr. Ives has faith in him (: hope you have a great time out there helping kev as you are one of the men who are experienced out there!! dad says to not let him persuade you into carrying him (:
hi kev first time ever i seen a ginger penguin with a beard, shame our dad isn’t there to carry you like on selection, dad keeps saying to look out for Santa and Rudolph, just roasting chestnuts on the wood burner at the moment listening to absolute80′s, we are having to open the windows as it is so warm in here. sorry have to go its roasting hot in here going to open a window.
