Ahhh my Dad (and Mark’s Dad!) has just done an interview with the radio station in Spain – plugging the website, asking the ex pats for donations and telling the listeners all about the teams and the challenge – well done Dad – let’s hope some of the locals dig into their pockets, they are also going to do another interview in a month or so to keep it fresh in people’s minds x

  12. To Both Teams

Well done on excellent progress so far. We raised a glass to you all at the Boxing Night last night.
You’ll be pleased to know the Army Team beat the Scottish ABA 5-2.
We also had my contemporary COs from the US (x2), Aus (x2), NZ, Can and Uganda (!) who all pass their best wishes and good luck.

  13. Hi all,

Just arrived back in Punta Arenas today. I would just like to say thank you for the messages of support. It helps dampen the disappointment at having to leave the expedition at such an early stage.

As it turned out I had picked up a bug just as we were leaving or just prior to it. Once the pilot had came in and picked me up the frequency of vomiting increased and I could no longer hold down any food at all (even vomiting mid meal on occasions) so with a lot of hindsight and time asking myself was it the right decision – I think it probably was. Your heart and pride tells you to push on but your brain does the maths and thats what you have to run with no matter how hard the decision is plus you don’t want to be a burden to the other team members. As it was I probably experienced the early signs of mild hyperthermia due to the loss of fluid and core temperature.

We were fortunate that the aircraft was holding off 2 hours away from us due to a poor weather front preventing him from returning to base at Union Glacier. We managed a pick up (from a crevasse field – great piloting Jim & Scott) and were eventually able to get to Union 24 hours later with a small break in the weather. This was the last opportunity for the next 8 days.If we had not made that decision there and then and chose to push on things could have deteriorated even further. Another individual on a different route with suspected frostbite had to sit in his tent for nearly 10 days because of the poor weather and as I departed Union last night they were attempting to extract him due to a break in the weather, so we were lucky.

Anyway, I have bored you enough and now I shall continue my contribution to the expedition on the home front with attempts to promote awareness and fundraising for the Royal British legion. I wish both teams the best and God Speed.

Once again, thank you for your support.
